Jamf School FAQ
General Information
What is Jamf School?
Jamf School ensures students are focused and engaged. It is a powerful teaching assistant that helps guide students through a lesson, allows teachers to provide appropriate apps for school use, and keeps students on track while in the classroom. In the classroom, when teachers choose to use Jamf Teacher, it allows them to do the following:
- Safelist apps used during the lesson;
- Send messages directly to students to provide in the moment, private support;
- Create an attention screen;
- Share links; and more.
All features of Jamf School are only available when a teacher chooses to enable them during their class time. It is removed when the student leaves the class and doesn’t follow them home.
Why are we using Jamf School?
Jamf School is an exclusive Apple solution that helps schools maximize the learning potential of iPad and Mac. This tool gives our teachers and IT staff the ability to ensure students and teachers have the apps they need while safeguarding students and their privacy. Importantly, Jamf School allows teachers and IT staff to suspend access to certain apps or web pages that are primarily used for social media, gaming, and/or streaming services during class time. For example, a teacher can restrict access to Snapchat during class using Jamf School. This eliminates students inappropriately accessing social media and VPNs during instructional time in the classroom which is both disruptive to teaching and time consuming for the IT staff to shut down.
In the past two years, we have seen drastic increases in students using their iPads inappropriately during class (playing games, using social media apps, watching videos, messaging, etc. during instructional time). Jamf School is meant as a solution to focus and enhance in-class iPad use. Jamf School is very similar to Apple Classroom, a classroom device management tool we have used in the past, but due to the mismatch of managed and unmanaged Apple IDs, this was no longer a viable option for us.
What is the Jamf Student app?
The Jamf Student is a free app that allows students access to content their teacher has identified as well as provides in-class supports. With Jamf Student, students have access to the Jamf Library, which includes apps, books, and documents that have been assigned to them. Students can digitally raise their hands and exchange messages with their teachers.
There are also four key classroom management features:
- attention displays a full-screen message from the teacher
- restriction mode prevents students from using any function that is restricted by the teacher (ex. Restricting access to social media apps)
- weblock prevents students from going to websites that are not whitelisted by the teacher
- lesson ensures that students only visit websites and use apps that the teacher configured for them. Students must have Bluetooth enabled to access the lesson.
What is the Jamf Teacher app and what can it do?
- Functions during school days and hours while the student is in Bluetooth range of the teacher device.
- Allows a classroom teacher to easily launch any app, website, or book on every student device at the same time while teaching.
- Allows teachers to group students by topic and launch a different app for each of the groups.
- Using the app in the classroom, a teacher can lock devices to refocus students on the content being taught at that time.
- Allows teachers to lock devices into a single app which especially ensures the integrity of online test taking.
- The “End Class” feature of the app disconnects student devices from the class while class is not in session.
Jamf School does not:
- collect or store any student data.
- require your child to download anything or install any spyware to his/her iPad.
- grant faculty or staff access to any private files on the iPad.
- give faculty remote access to your child’s screen
Who to contact with questions?
If you have any questions, please contact Theresa Allen (tallen@depaulprep.org) or Maggie Eaton (meaton@depaulprep.org). We thank you for your support in the deployment of these innovative education tools.
iPad Drop-off and Pick-Up Information
What do we need to do before dropping off my child’s iPad? Why do we need to do this?
Before dropping off your child’s iPad, please be sure to
- Have the device fully updated to the most recent iOS
- Back up to iCloud iPad backed up to iCloud
- Log out of the Apple ID.
- Have the iPad passcode ready to share with our IT staff.
If enabled, parental controls also need to be disabled. Parents can enable controls again once the iPad is returned. Jamf School will not interfere with any Apple parental controls.
We will not accept an iPad until steps 1-4 are completed. If you have difficulty with these steps please reach out to help@depaulprep.org.
When should we drop off our child’s iPad?
On Wednesday, August 17th - Friday, August 19th between 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, bring your child’s iPad to the commons. The technology team will have tables set up to collect your devices.
- Last names A-H: Wednesday, August 17 between 8:00 am -12:00 pm
- Last Names I-Q: Thursday, August 18 between 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
- Last Names R-Z: Friday, August 19 between 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Freshman devices will be ready for pick up at the beginning of orientation Tuesday, August 23rd.
Sophomore devices will be ready for pick up Monday, August 22, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm, or on Wednesday, August 24 between 12:00-3:00 pm.
If you are unable to come at these times, please contact help@depaulprep.org.
Is there a different time to drop off my child’s iPad? My child needs to work on their summer assignments before school starts.
If you are unable to make it to the scheduled device drop-off dates, contact help@depaulprep.org and we can find an alternate solution.
How will you keep our device safe while it is in DePaul Prep’s custody?
At iPad drop-off, students will fill out a Google Form with their name, school email address, device serial number, and passcode. When completed, this form will be sent directly to their school email address. This email serves as a receipt for the device. Upon pick-up, this email will be shown to DePaul Prep staff. While in our possession, devices will be kept in a locked room unless they are being worked on by a member of the technology team.
Additional Information
Will we lose the data/textbooks/Notability notes already on the iPad?
Before dropping off your child’s iPad, please be sure to back everything up. (How to back up my iPad) Although apps may be temporarily removed as a part of this transition, your child should be able to re-install them once the device has been logged back into their personal Apple ID. For this reason, it is important to back up any important items prior to the transition. Any books downloaded from iBooks can always be accessed from the purchase history of your student’s Apple ID and textbooks purchased from BNS can be retrieved on their website.
I’m worried about losing my Notability notes. What should I do to make sure those are saved?
It is good practice to have your Notability notes automatically backed up. There is an Auto-Backup option in Notability settings. This Auto-Backup article from Notability walks you through the steps needed to backup your notes. You can also restore them using this guide. A common issue is not having enough space in iCloud to backup all notes. There are a few options if you run into this issue. You can use Google Drive as your backup option and use your DePaul Prep email address. You can go through your notes and delete all non-essential notes that you will not need in the future or you can purchase additional iCloud storage from Apple.
Bonus: Notability will be free to students.
With Jamf School, students will be provided with free access to Notability (a paid app) and all app updates related to class learning so that students have the most updated application for learning.
Why is Jamf School being rolled out with freshmen and sophomores?
We wanted to start with a population of students who would benefit the most from all the supports Jamf School has to offer. Historically, freshmen and sophomore students need more support when it comes to using their iPad as a learning tool. We plan to assess the program at the end of first semester as well as at the end of the school year. We have plans to roll out Jamf School to our entire school population eventually.
Is Jamf School monitoring (security and supervision) software?
No, Jamf School is not a type of monitoring software where we can track what a student is doing on their iPad. Teachers will be circulating throughout the room, physically viewing student work and screens during class.
Additionally, Jamf School cannot see browser history, apps that are open, have access to the camera or collect sounds. Jamf school does have the ability to see which apps are installed on a device, but not any information relating to the usage of the apps. Jamf School also provides a basic location function by using an IP address, which is approximate.
I am concerned about privacy. What data is collected and stored by Jamf School?
Only basic device inventory information—such as hardware, operating system, user and location information, is collected.
I still have security questions.
Please see the Jamf School Security Overview for more information.
NEW: Magnus Health + Required Health Forms
9th Grade Requirements
Required Forms:
Certificate of Child Health
- Physical Exams completed within 1 year prior to entrance into 9th grade. The exam MUST be completed on the required "Certificate of Child Health" form.
- For 9th graders this form can also be used for the Sports Physical, rather than the IESA/IHSA form as long as the physician marks "yes" for participation in interscholastic sports. However, the IESA/IHSA forms can not be substituted for the Certificate of Child Health form for 9th graders.
- Parents are required to complete the top portion (medical history) of the Certificate of Child Health form, sign and date it. Failure to do so will result in the form being rejected.
Immunization Records
- Both the Physical Exam form and immunization record must be submitted by October 15th to be in compliance with the Illinois State Board of Education.
Eye Exams
Eye Exams are only required for students that have transferred from an out-of-state school and this is their 1st year in an Illinois school. This form is due by October 15, 2022.
Dental Exams
Dental Exams are required for 9th graders and must be submitted by May 15th of the current school year and must be completed no more than 18 months prior to the May 15th deadline.
All Required Health Forms can be found on the Student Health page.
It is CRITICAL that all families enter their child’s medical information into our Magnus system by August 15, 2022. This includes all vaccination information and other required medical documentation. DePaul Prep will strictly enforce childhood immunization requirements and will hold students out of school if these are not in place as is required by the Illinois State Board of Education. Please review the IDPH Immunization Requirements here. See below for how to access Magnus if you have not already done so.

Welcome from the Dean’s Office
Welcome to the new school year! We are excited and looking forward to meeting you all. Dean Melisa Lord, will be supporting the juniors and seniors. Dean Maggie Pagan, will be supporting the freshman and sophomore class. We are both looking forward to getting to know you and your child along with partnering with each of you to ensure a positive and safe learning experience this school year. Combined, we bring to DCP a great deal of experience in school management, educational leadership and youth development. We are prepared to be a great support in the continued success and growth of Depaul College Prep!
As you prepare to return back to school we would like to highlight some key pieces of information that you will need to be successful this school year. We encourage all students and parents to review the behavior expectations in the Parent/Student Handbook. The Handbook provides detailed information about expectations and policies. Below we highlighted some important policies for you to adhere to:
- Cell phones are not to be visible or used during school hours.
- Hoodies with DePaul Prep logo are only to be worn on Fridays.
- Hair color must be a natural color (by the first day of school).
- Daily Attendance and punctuality is mandatory.
These policies will be strictly enforced for the benefit of our students, staff and families. Please reach out to us if you have any concerns or questions. We wish you a wonderful school year and we look forward to meeting each of you.

Incoming Student Preparation
We are reaching out to parents of our freshmen and transferring students to help answer the question: “What can I do to help my student prepare for the start of their high school experience at DePaul Prep?” In addition to the items and checklists contained on our Back To School Information site, here are some resources and tips we hope will help you and your student get ready for this exciting transition.
Taking on Responsibilities
In high school, students are asked, even required, to begin taking responsibility for themselves in ways that may be new for them. To prepare for this, we offer these suggestions for this summer to help with this:
- Give your child responsibilities at home, whether this is related to chores or other ways of contributing to your household, and hold them accountable for their contributions.
- Ensure that your child prepares this summer to get to a developmental stage where they can manage aspects of their lives independently such as getting up in the morning on their own, without you having to wake them. They should also be able to prepare themselves for school independently, including ensuring they have all necessary parts of their uniform, school materials, iPad, lunch and items that they will need for their day at school.
- Once the school day begins, parents are not permitted to drop off items forgotten at home. Our Main Desk personnel have too many other obligations to manage during the day. Thank you for respecting our staff.
Time management
On-time arrival to school is an important part of every day for a high school student. Missing even the first few minutes of the school day can mean that a student begins their day “off-balance”. Please note the following points below to help start the year off with good habits in this area:
- Classes start promptly at 7:45 am at DePaul Prep. Late arrivals are tardy.
- For security reasons, the south doors to the Commons are locked at 7:40 am and entrance is only through the north doors thereafter.
- Work with your child to arrive on campus by 7:30 am every day so that they can go to their locker and be seated in their classroom at 7:45 am, prepared to learn.
Executive Functioning
Executive functioning skills allow us as adults to meet all of our responsibilities at home and work as well as allow us to ensure time for rest and relaxation. Having a highly developed set of executive functioning skills is critical to success for high school students too. Consider working with your child in the following areas this summer:
- Management of their own schedule within reason - are they allowing enough time to arrive places on time? Do they plan ahead to ensure they can meet all of their obligations?
- Sleep habits - In order to function optimally in school, students need to get a significant amount of sleep. While summer often signals a less structured schedule, helping your child establish healthy sleep patterns is really important. This is a habit that should begin now as opposed to the week that school begins.
- Management of their possessions and space - Because parents are not able to bring forgotten items to school for their child, helping students learn the importance of checking to ensure they have everything they need for the day is another way to prepare them for high school.
Below are some resources that may be helpful as you navigate this development process with your child:
- Rush NeuroBehavioral Center - Executive Functioning
- Center for the Developing Child - Harvard University: Executive Function and Self Regulation
- Smart But Scattered resources from author Peg Dawson
DePaul Prep also addresses time management and executive functioning in our Advisory class periods, however, you can help your child to be successful from the start by familiarizing yourself and your child with these principles this summer.
Social Media and Cell Phones
Students may not use their cell phones or have them visible during the school day at DePaul Prep. Students are here to learn, to focus on class and school work, and to engage in face-to-face interactions with adults and their peers. This summer, we recommend that you and your student discuss this policy and begin to decrease their screen time well before school starts in August. These are hard habits to break especially for teens who are trying to balance impulse control and emotional regulation against the attraction of a cell phone. We ask for your assistance this summer to manage the proper use of cell phones on campus to ensure a smoother transition for your child in the fall.
Social media can be fun and interesting. It can also have unanticipated negative impacts on the mental health of young adults. It’s likely that you as a parent have experienced the detrimental effects of social media and can see how this can affect your child. We recommend this set of resources from Common Sense Media as you navigate these experiences with your child and to help you recognize how social media can impact your child’s mental well being.
Summer Required Reading
Please have your student consult and complete their Summer Required Reading assignments now and not on the night before the first day of school. This is their responsibility as incoming high school students and an important part of their introduction to the learning curriculum.
Our hope is that when your child arrives at Freshmen and New Students’ Orientation on Tuesday, August 23, they will arrive feeling ready for this new challenge in their lives and excited to join the DePaul College Prep community. We look forward to welcoming them to a marvelous year of personal and intellectual growth.

Our plan is to be outdoors and utilize the field turf and green grass across the street beginning on the first day up to the beginning of November.
Locker rooms are going to be available under the bleachers for students to change when we will be outside. If weather forces us to adapt and have class indoors, students will use any of the four restrooms on the first floor to change for class. Classes will be bussed to the Fr. Gordon campus gym when the weather conditions do not permit us to use outdoor facilities.
If you have any questions, please contact Joe Voss at jvoss@depaulprep.org or Maria Hill at mhill@depaulprep.org.
NEW STUDENTS: Chicago Public Library Card
All new students are required to obtain a (free!) Chicago Public Library card, or have a library card in verifiable good standing on the first day of school. Information on how to obtain a Chicago Public Library card can be found HERE. E-Cards are not acceptable and an actual physical library card is required.
"Vintage" brand Spirit Wear & Uniforms
ALL STUDENTS: Any spirit wear with the "vintage" old logos and branding (the D with the blue and orange cross woven through), including 1/4-zip pullovers, fleece pullovers, and outerwear spirit wear, either purchased previously through the Spirit Shop or team shops are still allowed to be worn on spirit days.
NEW STUDENTS: While official school uniform polos must bear the new branding, any spirit wear with the old branding previously ordered or purchased will be allowed to be worn as outerwear.
Student Dining & My MealTime
My MealTime Online: Due to COVID 19 concerns, we are encouraging cashless transactions whenever possible. We are happy to offer you the option to add money to your student’s meal account online through My MealTime www.mymealtime.com. A 4.9% fee is charged by the third party/bank. To avoid the fee, an account balance can be established in advance by check made out to Quest Food Services, and delivered to school. Purchases will be debited against that account balance. NEW PARENTS should set up an online account using your student’s “Quest/Meal Time Number” = student ID # (visible after sign in on PowerSchool and begins with a 1). Student IDs can then be scanned to purchase items in the cafeteria. Balances at the end of the year will be transferred to the following school year.
Please contact Quest after Monday, August 15 if you have any dietary needs, questions, or concerns. Food Service Director- Terese Williamson, terese.williamson@questfms.com
Visit our Food Services page to set up a My MealTime account online and learn about Quest Food Management.

ADDING TRANSIT VALUE TO YOUR CARD
Your Student Ventra Card is active and can be used as soon as you add transit value. You can add transit value online at ventrachicago.com, via the Ventra App (available for download through Google Play or in the Apple App Store), at Ventra Vending Machines at CTA rail stations, at participating local Retailers (use the Find A Retailer map on ventrachicago.com to find a location nearby), or over the phone by calling 877-669-8368.
REGISTERING YOUR CARD
Your card is not automatically registered. Registering your card is optional but has many benefits including protection of your transit value if your Card is lost or stolen, access to convenient account management features online or via the Ventra App, and e-mail notifications with important messages about your account. Register at ventrachicago.com, or by calling 877-669-8368. If you already have a Ventra web account, simply log in and click on Register a Ventra Card. By following this process, you can add new cards to your existing account without having to create a separate online account. It does not matter whether you register the card to the student or parent.
STUDENT VENTRA CARD BENEFITS
This card entitles you to the Student Reduced Fares noted below for trips taken Monday thru Friday between 5:30AM and 8:30PM on CTA buses and trains only. You will automatically be charged the Full Fare outside of these times.
IMPORTANT – RENEWING YOUR STUDENT FARE PRIVILEGES
This card does not entitle you to the Student Reduced Fare indefinitely. You must renew in the fall for every new school year. Bring your Student Ventra Card to the main office at the beginning of the school year. We will renew the reduced fare entitlement by sending your card information to CTA. It will take a few days to process.
HOW TO USE THE CARD
Tap your Student Ventra Card on the Ventra readers to pay for train and bus fare (including transfers) with transit value. Alternatively, to pay with cash/coins on buses, you can request the reduced fare and show the driver your Student Ventra Card. Please note that bus drivers cannot give change and transfers are not available when paying with cash.
REPLACING YOUR CARD IF IT IS LOST, STOLEN OR DAMAGED
You will need to purchase another Student Ventra Card in the DePaul Prep Main Office. Please note that we buy a limited number of cards and may sell out during the school year. If the old card was registered, your parent or guardian can call 877-669-8368 to have a balance transferred to your new card.

Please contact Mr. Tom Kleinschmidt if you are interested.
Athletics & Fall Sports
Register for Fall Sports
If your student plans to participate in our athletics program for any season (Fall, Winter, and/or Spring), the following forms must be completed and the following steps must be taken:

DePaul Prep must have an up-to-date IHSA Pre-Participation Examination Form (this is in addition to the State of IL Health Exam/Physical form) and Sport Medicine and Acknowledgement Consent Form on file before team tryouts. The IHSA form must be filled out, signed by 1) a physician, 2) your student, and 3) a parent/guardian. You will upload your IHSA Exam Form to your Magnus Health profile (see MAGNUS HEALTH above). A tutorial video on how to upload your forms is available on the Athletics homepage.
