Teams all over the state attend open practices, build muscular strength/endurance, enhance their fitness levels, hold mandatory practices, and prepare for their season as spring approaches. The Rams are no different. However, DePaul Prep baseball chose to apply an emphasis on the mental game this off-season as well. Study sessions, assigned readings, and morning reflection time absorbed much of the Rams offseason to enhance the team’s holistic approach to the game.
“We’re young. We have a lot of young talent on our roster and we felt that focusing on the mental game of baseball during this offseason would directly impact our performance and development as the season progressed,” stated head coach Chris Haas. “Steve (Costello) has a passion for understanding the mental side of the game and has access to several credible sources from professionals around the game of baseball. We felt, with him as our mental game “teacher”, that our student-athletes would benefit strongly from the experience.” Steve Costello is an assistant coach for DePaul Prep baseball.
In order to employ the lessons learned during the offseason, it requires leadership both on and off the field. As any team, the Rams will look to the seniors to keep the focus. Returning to the Rams this season for their senior campaign are Matt Benz (C,1B, P), Joe Palella (OF, P), Miguel Zuno (P), and Ben Hartman (C). Junior Joe Modica will start the season as the Ram’s ace on the mound while filling spots in the outfield as well. Junior Ryan Martin looks to build off of an up and down season in 2017 contributing at third base and as a pitcher. Juniors Nathan Thompson, Bradley Pyke, and Hank Wagner will also look to contribute to the Ram’s success in 2018. Star shortstop and sophomore Ernesto Moreno will lead the Rams at the plate and on defense as he looks to continue his success after an impressive freshman season. Sophomores Mike Flynn (OF, P), Jacob Tomberlin (OF), Zach Burhans (P,C, 1B), and Richard Merkl (OF, P) will all look to step up and make a major impact in the Rams success for 2018 as well. They said DePaul College Prep was young. Rookie freshmen Abel Yolich (2B/SS), Joe Rivera (IF, P), and Connor Fitzgerald (1B, P) will look to grab a hold of the reigns and set the tone for the Rams this season while laying the groundwork proving that the way to win is all about the “PROCESS”.
The Rams will kick off their 2018 season Wednesday, March 14, 2018 as they play host to Chicago Bulls Prep at 7:30p at Kerry Wood Field. On the mound for the opener will be junior right-hander Joe Modica. If you cannot make it out to Kerry Wood Field for opening day be sure to follow all live Rams baseball coverage on Gamechanger which can be found on the DePaul College Prep baseball website.
