DePaul College Prep Statement Regarding Boys Basketball Advancement to State Finals

March 9, 2019

Late in the evening of Friday, March 8th after DePaul College Prep defeated St. Viator in an exciting, well-played IHSA Sectional Championship Game, IHSA Associate Executive Director, Kurt Gibson, notified DePaul Prep Director of Athletics, Patrick Mahoney, that DePaul Prep would be advancing automatically to the State Finals in Peoria.  Mr. Gibson explained that unfortunate circumstances surrounding the end of the North Lawndale Sectional Championship Game led to a double forfeit leaving DePaul Prep without an opponent in the IHSA Super-Sectionals.

While the DePaul Prep boys basketball team and our community are disappointed not to have the Super-Sectional experience, we are thrilled that our boys basketball team’s historic season will continue at the State Finals which is every basketball-playing school’s ultimate goal.  DePaul Prep understands the IHSA’s decision. We know the IHSA is thoughtful and does not make tough decisions on a whim, and we appreciate the IHSA’s leadership and emphasis on the importance of sportsmanship.

DePaul Prep will focus all our attention now on planning for the State Finals where we know our boys team will represent our school and our conference, the Chicago Catholic League, with athleticism, sportsmanship and integrity.  This will be DePaul Prep’s first trip to the Finals for boys basketball in its five-year history. We are so proud of our coaches and our team for the dedication and teamwork which brought us to this point in our season. We’re All In For DePaul Prep! and All In for our Team!

DePaul Prep will play the winner of the Joliet Central Super-Sectional in the IHSA Class 3A State Semifinals on Friday, March 15th at 11:00 AM at the Carver Arena in the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria, Illinois.

More details for the DePaul Prep community will follow soon.
