Return to School Plan

rev. 10/5/20

Our Guiding Principles

Maintaining Community and School Culture: Students, Teachers, & Families

At DePaul College Prep, we think of our community as a family where all members are of importance and deserving of a top quality educational program. One of the strengths of our community is in our ability to connect with one another, whether in the classroom, through extracurriculars or through time spent enjoying relationships built through our common DePaul Prep connection. We believe that maintaining our connections as a community is critical to our continued success.

Creating Healthy and Safe Environments

We are living in a time where nothing is more important than the health and safety of our students, families and our faculty and staff. Our Plan lays out clear protocols and procedures for how we will address COVID-19 and all that is associated with this virus. We have endeavored to create a Return to School Plan rooted in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) guidance for schools and that reflects the needs of our community. The information provided below previews all of our preventative measures as well as ways in which we will respond to COVID-19 issues that may arise.

Supporting Academic Success and Student Wellness

We commit to continued academic success and social emotional support of each of our students. While the past several months have been a challenge for us all, we ask for your continued partnership as we navigate through these unprecedented times and strive to maintain the standard of excellence we have established in both our in-person instruction as well as in our E-Learning instruction. We will continue to hone our skills as a faculty and staff through professional development focused on blended learning and student engagement. We believe in the collective ability of our students, our families and our teachers as we forge a path forward on our new campus. Our ability to exhibit kindness, flexibility, and resilience will see us through to our bright future in the 2020-21 school year.

Return to School Plan: Academic Program Schedule

To ensure the continued quality and continuity of our academic program, a schedule has been created for this unique situation. We will use a Hybrid Block Schedule to open the school year.

Students will attend In-Person learning in two groups: 9th and 10th grade students on Mondays & Thursdaysand 11th and 12th grade students on Tuesdays & Fridays.

The rationale for these groupings is that the majority of our courses that are multi-grade are distributed in this way. By grouping freshmen & sophomores together and juniors & seniors together, there is less disruption to student and teacher schedules. Also, the In-Person schedule mirrors our E-Learning schedule to reduce confusion and create stronger time management routines for our students and families.

See the E-Learning Guide to review:

COVID-19 Safety and Health Protocols and Procedures

As DePaul College Prep continues to monitor the local, national and worldwide incidence of COVID-19, the coronavirus and the illness it causes, the safety of our students and our faculty and staff are the school’s highest priorities in setting these protocols and procedures.   Our main goals are as follows:

  • Maintain the safety and health of our students, faculty and staff;
  • Sustain, to the extent possible, academic programs, student services and operational continuity;
  • Encourage an environment of open communication and flexibility to help ensure the well-being of the entire DePaul College Prep Community

The purpose of the below segments of our Return to School Plan is to explain how DePaul College Prep will implement safety and health protocols to combat the COVID-19 virus when students and adults are on campus. DePaul Prep’s administration and faculty will implement these protocols with the assistance of CA Strata, our new campus management team; Midway Maintenance, our new janitorial service; and Blue Line Security; and Quest Food Services.

With everyone’s cooperation and participation, we will be able to provide a safe school and work environment.  Each section outlined below is rooted in CDC recommendations and has been customized for our setting and population. This is a living Plan that will change as new recommendations are issued by ISBE and the CDC.

Promoting Behaviors that Reduce Spread

DePaul Prep will implement several strategies to encourage behaviors that reduce the spread of COVID-19. We ask that ALL students, faculty and staff abide by these guidelines:

Stay Home When:

If a student or staff member feels healthy but recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19:

  • Stay home and monitor your health (Quarantine)
  • Stay home until 14 days after your last exposure
  • Check your temperature twice a day and watch for symptoms of COVID-19
  • If possible, stay away from people who are at higher-risk for getting very sick from COVID-19
  • Students should engage in E-learning while they are quarantined; courses have been designed to be fully accessible online for this purpose

If a student or staff member has been diagnosed with COVID-19, is waiting for test results, or has cough, fever, or shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19:

Isolate Yourself from Others (Isolation).
Take the Following Steps if a student has been diagnosed with COVID-19:
  • Report this diagnosis to our COVID-19 Point of Contact, Ms. Mary Jeske, as soon as the diagnosis is provided by a medical professional
  • Report the student’s absence to our Attendance Office

If a student, staff member or member of a student’s immediate family recently traveled from somewhere outside the United States or on a cruise ship or river boat:

Travel Protocols:  Follow CDC Guidance for when a family returns from  international travel returning from cruise ship or river voyages.

Additionally, all DePaul Prep students, faculty and staff and family members are required to adhere to the City of Chicago Order regarding travel to states with an increased level of COVID-19 cases. Effective July 6, 2020, travelers from the following states, including Chicago residents returning from these states, will be directed to quarantine for fourteen days upon arrival in Chicago. Please make careful plans as the start of the school year approaches. Students who return from these states must have completed their full 14 days of quarantine before coming to school.
